BYLAWS - SCHOOL OF MUSIC

ARTICLE II:  FACULTY OFFICERS

SECTION A:     Director

  1. The Director of the School of Music shall serve as chair of the meetings of the music faculty.  In case of absence of the Director, the Assistant Director of the School shall serve as chair of the faculty meetings.  In cases when the Director and Assistant Director are both absent, the Director shall designate a temporary chair for specific meetings of the music faculty.

  2. The duties and responsibilities of the Director shall be
    1. To exert leadership in the development of curriculum, methods, and growth of the School
    2. To act as official School representative
    3. To represent the needs of the School to the Dean of the College of Arts and Science, other University administrators, the University community, and the alumni of the School
    4. To manage all budget accounts of the School
    5. To maintain all School records
    6. To supply each faculty member of the music faculty an up-to-date version of these Bylaws and Standing Rules each fall and at other times within two weeks after substantial changes have been made
    7. To coordinate programs in areas, student advisement, the use of facilities, the scheduling of activities, and final applied exams
    8. To consult with area concerned and oversee and assign loads in teaching, performance, research, and service
    9. To evaluate faculty accomplishments in teaching, research/creative activity, and service
    10. To determine annual salary adjustments of faculty and staff based on faculty and staff annual evaluations
    11. To evaluate and coordinate all ensembles
    12. To appoint director(s) of undergraduate and graduate studies for an annual or other specified period, or on a continuing basis
    13. To appoint area coordinators for an annual or other specified period, or on a continuing basis
    14. To appoint faculty to music faculty search committees and other ad hoc committees with specific task assignments
    15. To appoint a liaison/representative for the School of Music to the Ellis Library for an annual or other specified period, or on a continuing basis
    16. To appoint a liaison/representative for the School of Music for computer services for an annual or other specified period, or on a continuing basis
    17. To provide other services not specified in these Bylaws, as assigned by the administration or music faculty

  3. The duties in relation to committees shall be
    1. To have final authority on student problems, with the option of referral to an appropriate committee for advisement
    2. To make budget decisions with advice from the Budget Advisory Committee, except in matters of salary adjustment
    3. To serve as an ex officio, non-voting member on the following committees:  Curriculum, Scholarship, Personnel, Tenured Faculty, Full Professors, and Grievance

SECTION B:      Assistant Director

  1. The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Director shall be
    1. To act as official School representative in the absence of the Director
    2. To assist the Director in coordinating the use of facilities, the scheduling of activities, and the maintenance of School and University records of instruments and equipment
    3. To provide other services not specified by these Bylaws, as assigned by the Director

SECTION C:      Director(s) of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies

  1. The duties and responsibilities of the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Music shall be
    1. To coordinate the advising of students
    2. To coordinate admissions requirements
    3. To participate in review processes such as accreditation and program review/planning
    4. To serve on School of Music committees as designated in Article V
    5. To respond to inquiries about the program

  2. The duties and responsibilities of the Director of Graduate Studies in Music shall be
    1. To coordinate advising of students
    2. To coordinate admission requirements
    3. To administer all entrance examinations to graduate students entering the School of Music in conjunction and consultation with appropriate area coordinators
    4. To administer all comprehensive examinations to graduate students completing degree programs in the School of Music

  3. The duties and responsibilities of the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Music Education shall be
    1. To coordinate the advising of students
    2. To coordinate admission requirements, including admission to Professional Standing
    3. To serve as a liaison with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the College of Education
    4. To participate in review processes such as accreditation and program review/planning
    5. To serve on School of Music committees as designated in Article V
    6. To respond to inquiries about the program

  4. The duties and responsibilities of the Director of Graduate Studies in Music Education shall be
    1. To coordinate the advising of students
    2. To coordinate admission requirements
    3. To serve as a liaison with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the College of Education
    4. To participate in review processes such as accreditation and program review/planning
    5. To administer all comprehensive examinations to graduate students completing degree programs in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction
    6. To serve on School of Music committees as designated in Article V
    7. To respond to inquiries about the program

SECTION D:      Secretary

  1. The senior secretary (or administrative assistant) of the School of Music, or designee, shall serve as the Secretary of the music faculty.
  2. The other duties of the Secretary shall be
    1. To distribute or post (or both) the minutes of the faculty meeting at a time that is reasonable after the meeting and before the succeeding meeting
    2. To maintain a file of minutes of the meetings of the music faculty for a period of no less than five years
    3. To assist the Director and other faculty members in preparing materials for faculty meetings
    4. Other duties as designated by the music faculty or the Director
