ARTICLE VIII:  STANDING RULES

Standing Rule 5.  Appointment and Promotion of Non-Regular Faculty

1.    The Collected Rules and Regulations of the Curators of the University of Missouri, 310.020, provides for the appointment of non-regular faculty.

2.    Non-regular appointments may be a) temporary or visiting faculty (not to exceed seven years), b) part-time faculty, or c) full-time faculty whose duties are substantially different from those of faculty members holding regular appointments.

3.    Part-time faculty and full-time faculty whose duties are substantially different from those of regular faculty may be promoted. These non-regular faculty hold an academic title that is a modified version of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor. Examples of such non-regular titles include resident instruction assistant professor, resident instruction associate professor, resident instruction professor, and adjunct assistant professor, etc.

4.    The normal distribution of duties for regular faculty in the School of Music is 40% teaching, 40% research/creative achievement, and 20% service. For non-regular faculty appointments in the School of Music, the distribution of duties is 60% teaching, 20% research/creative achievement, and 20% service. In special cases in which service is a heavy responsibility for a non-regular faculty member, the distribution of duties may, with the permission of the Director of the School, be adjusted to be 50% teaching, 20% research/creative achievement, and 30% service.

5.    The criteria for judging a candidate's qualifications for promotion are described in Standing Rule 2 of the Bylaws of the School of Music. The procedures to be followed for review of candidates for promotion will be the same as those for regular faculty. Those procedures can be found in Standing Rule 3.

6.    Non-regular faculty will be subject to annual reviews by the Music Personnel Committee and the Director of the School. Those reviews will be based on the criteria for evaluating teaching, research/creative achievement, and service as set forth in Standing Rule 2.

7.    Should any substantive difference be found between this document and others pertaining to the appointment and promotion of non-regular faculty, the definitive version of the rules pertaining to non-regular faculty may be found in 310.020 of the Collected Rules and Regulations of the Curators of the University of Missouri.
