ARTICLE VIII:  STANDING RULES

Standing Rule 9.   Faculty Search Procedures

1. After approval of the search from the Dean and Provost, a faculty vacancy notice shall be prepared with the assistance of the Search Committee.   This notice shall be distributed nationally to appropriate publications and other forums.   In addition, each faculty member shall be given a copy.
2. The committee shall determine its own procedures for reviewing candidates and for the selection of finalists consistent with University hiring policies.
3. The Search Committee shall recommend to the Director of the School the names of candidates to be interviewed/ auditioned for the position.
4. A brief vita for each candidate being interviewed shall be made available to all music faculty members.
5. Whenever possible a candidate shall perform in his own area or areas, whether lecturing, conducting, or performance.   In addition, each candidate shall give a presentation demonstrating skill in teaching.
6. All music faculty members and students shall be informed about and invited to attend lectures, performances, and/or presentations of each candidate.
7. Each candidate shall be available for "conversation hours" to which all music students and faculty are invited.
8. The Search Committee, the Personnel Committee, and the Director of the School, as well as a representative from the Dean's office, shall interview each candidate.   In addition, members of the Search Committee and of the Personnel Committee are to make every reasonable effort to attend the candidate's lectures, performances, and/or other presentations.
9. The Search Committee shall solicit evaluations of each candidate from music faculty and students.
10. The Search Committee shall make a recommendation to the Director of the School as to its order of preference regarding the candidates, and which candidates, if any, it finds unacceptable.
11. The Director of the School shall present the recommendation of the Search Committee to the Personnel Committee, who shall vote in an advisory capacity to support or reject the Search Committee's recommendation.   While the Personnel Committee clearly has a vital interest in all aspects of a candidate's qualifications, the committee's primary concern should be the candidate's potential for achieving tenure and promotion.
12. The Director of the School shall make a final recommendation to the Dean of the College of Arts and Science.
