The Sinquefield Composition Prize for
University of Missouri Students
The deadline for submission of compositions: TBA
Purpose
To provide students at the University of Missouri an opportunity to write original works for Mizzou’s premiere large ensembles and have their music performed and recorded.
Eligibility
Any undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Missouri-Columbia may submit an original fine art composition for consideration. Professional composers from outside the MU School of Music will serve as judges for the competition.
Submission and Judging
Students will submit works to the composition faculty. The judges will select one composer to write a piece for large ensemble. The student will have the option of composing for either the Symphonic Wind Ensemble or the University Philharmonic.
Application and Guidelines
Composers will submit one score and corresponding recording (live performance or computer realization) of any instrumentation and any duration along with an application form.
Award
The student will be awarded a scholarship to the University of Missouri and a cash prize for the production of score and parts.
Performance at the Chancellor's Concert
The commissioned work will be premiered at the Chancellor’s Concert in Jesse Auditorium in March 2008. This will give the student composer the learning experience of working with the conductors and musicians of Mizzou’s large ensembles.
Recording
Following the performance, the selected ensemble will record the commissioned work at the expense of the Creating Original Music Project (COMP). This recording will be used to promote the composer’s career and bring recognition to new music at the University of Missouri.
Inscription
The score and parts will include the inscription: Commissioned by Dr. Jeanne Sinquefield for the 2008 University of Missouri Chancellor’s Concert.
