Professional Baccalaureate Degrees in Music

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE
BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE (AB) IN MUSIC

The Bachelor of Arts degree (AB) with a major in music and related field, or a minor in an another area, provides the undergraduate student with a different approach to liberal arts education. This is ideally a 120-hour degree in which the number of courses in music is less than in the professionally-oriented BM or BS degrees, thereby making more hours available for non-music courses. The degree does, however, require a well-rounded set of courses that will leave the student with excellent musical understanding and performance skills. In addition, the student has the freedom to be able to pursue in some depth a secondary area in which he or she might have a considerable interest, or which might form the basis of a specific kind of professional training.

NON-MUSIC COURSE REQUIREMENTS.

The undergraduate requirements outside the major are the same as those required for all other AB degrees in the college of Arts and Science. They are listed below.

Basic Skills
English: There are three fundamental requirements in English Composition:
• Completion of English 1000 (the prerequisite to all Writing Intensive Courses).
• Completion of 2 MU "Writing Intensive" courses with a grade of C or higher; at least one must be in music.

Mathematics: There are two requirements in Mathematics:
• One course in college-level algebra (Math 1100 or equivalent).
• One course designated as a Mathematics Reasoning Proficiency (MRP) course.

Languages: Each student is required to attain the degree of proficiency equivalent to the completion of 12-13 hours of college-level work in a single foreign language-two 5-hour basic courses and a 3-hour intermediate course. (For Italian the requirement is two 6-hour courses) Completion through level IV of a single language in high school fulfills this requirement.

General Education

Physical, Biological, & Math Sciences 9 hours, including one course with a laboratory, distributed between two subjects.

Social Sciences 9 hours distributed between two subjects. The State of Missouri requirement for one course in American History or Government may be counted toward this 9 hour requirement.

Fine Arts/Humanities 12 hours distributed among three subjects.

Behavioral Sciences 5-6 hours.
Students must complete three courses numbered 1000 or higher in two of the four areas listed above.

Related Field or Minor
A related field (minimum of 8 hours, including at least two 1000-level courses) can be chosen in a subject which supports or enhances the student's musical coursework.

A minor (minimum of 15 hours, depending on the department) may take the place of a related field. All aspects of a minor are subject to the policies established by that department. For specific requirements, consult the Undergraduate Catalog under the appropriate department.

If a student is earning a double major, then the second major takes the place of the related field or minor.

"2000-level" Requirement
A minimum of 30 hours of courses numbered 2000 or higher must be taken, including music courses.

Courses taken to fulfill the General Education requirement cannot be applied to courses in the Area of Concentration (music) or the Allied Area or Minor.
