Professional Graduate Degrees in Music
Objectives include opportunities for continued development of individual musical talents, scholarly competencies, and the enhancement of interests in areas other than music. This liberal graduate education is designed to prepare a student to pursue a career in college teaching or continue graduate studies toward a doctoral degree.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS. Prerequisites for entrance into the Master of Arts degree program in Music History include:
Admission to the Graduate
School
Keyboard competency equivalent to that expected for Music 2455
4 semesters of languages-2 semesters each of French, Italian, or German
3 courses beyond the core music history course (Music 2308)
Freshman/sophomore music theory course courses
2 semesters of orchestration
1 course in counterpoint (3 hours or equivalent)
1 course in Western Civilization
1 course in European History prior to 1800
COURSEWORK DISTRIBUTION. In addition to fulfilling regular degree requirements,
a minimum of 16 hours must be completed at the graduate level.
