Students in a degree program majoring in another department within the College of Arts & Science may concurrently earn a Minor in music. Students majoring in departments outside of the College of Arts & Science should consult with their departmental advisors to determine whether a notation of an earned music minor will appear on official transcripts. Requirements for the Music Minor are as follows:
A minimum of 18 hours of music courses must be completed, with a minimum of four hours (six in Music History) in each of the categories listed below. Because of the prerequisites that many courses have, the course numbers suggested below (in parentheses) usually constitute the minimum requirements.
Category I: Music Theory (Music 1220 and 1221)
Category II: Music History (Music 1322, 2307, and 2308)
Category III: Performance (The student may choose from among appropriate applied classes [generally Music 2445 for Music Minors] and/or ensemble courses [e.g., Music 1841 or 1842]).
Category IV: The student must choose one of the above categories for his or her "emphasis area" and earn at least 4 additional hours in that category with the approval of his music advisor. If history or theory is the emphasis area, then the normal course sequence should be followed.
