Piano Audition Requirements
and Repertoire Recommendations


Music 1445 Studio Instruction. One hour lesson per week, 1 hr. credit.

Undergraduate non-music majors only. The most elementary level offered.

Admission Audition: (Must have studied classical-style piano for 3 full years prior to audition.) Play two short pieces in contrasting styles (slow & fast, loud & quiet, different composers). One must be memorized. Sample repertoire: Bach Two-Part Invention, Kuhlau/Haydn Sonatina movement, Schumann Traumerei, Bartok For Children

Technique: In this level, you will be required to do all major or all harmonic minor scales (alternate semesters), 4 octaves, hands together, one octave apart AND all tonic major or minor arpeggios (alternate semesters), root position, 4 octaves, hands together.

Jury: In the final performance examination, you will perform at least two short pieces from memory, plus samples of the technique studied

Music 1435 Studio Instruction for Majors. One hour lesson per week, 1 hr. credit.

Undergraduate music majors that have completed proficiency, or secondary instrument for BM, BA, and BS degree programs. Also a preparatory level for those needing to prepare for 2455

Admission Audition: Students that have completed Piano Proficiency Exam do not have to audition. Sample repertoire: Bach Two-Part Invention, Kuhlau/Haydn Sonatina movement, Schumann Traumerei, Bartok For Children

Technique: In this level, you will be required to do all major or all harmonic minor scales (alternate semesters), 4 octaves, hands together, one octave apart AND all tonic major or minor arpeggios (alternate semesters), root position, 4 octaves, hands together.

Jury: In the final performance examination, you will perform at least two short pieces from memory, plus samples of the technique studied

2445 Studio Instruction for Non- Majors. One hour lesson per week, 1-2 hrs. credit.

Non-music majors (underclass) at an intermediate level (comparable to music major piano concentrations) and music minors (1 hr. credit).

Admission Audition: (Must have studied classical-style piano for 3 full years prior to audition.) Play two pieces in contrasting styles (slow & fast, loud & quiet, different composers). One must be memorized. Sample repertoire: Bach Preludes, Clementi/Haydn/Beethoven Sonatina movements, Chopin Preludes, Debussy Arabesque, Bartok Bear Dance

Technique: In this level, you will be required to do all major or all harmonic minor scales (alternate semesters), 4 octaves, hands together, one octave apart AND all tonic major or minor arpeggios (alternate semesters), root position, 4 octaves, hands together.

Jury: In the final performance examination, you will perform at least two short pieces from memory, plus samples of the technique studied

2455 Studio Instruction. One hour lesson per week, 1-5 hrs. credit.

BS in music education and BA piano concentrations (2 hrs. credit); BM in piano performance majors (4 hrs. credit).

Admission Audition: (Must have studied classical-style piano for 3 full years prior to audition.)

FOR BS or BA degree: Play two or three pieces in contrasting styles (slow/fast, loud/quiet, fingers/chords, different composers). Two should be memorized. Sample repertoire: Bach Preludes, Clementi/Haydn/Beethoven Sonatina movements, Chopin Preludes, Debussy Arabesque, Bartok Bear Dance

FOR BM degree: Play three or four pieces in contrasting styles. Three should be memorized. Sample repertoire: Bach Dances or Preludes & Fugues, Clementi/Haydn/Mozart/Beethoven Sonatas, Chopin Nocturne/Polonaise/Waltz, Debussy Preludes, Khatchaturian Toccata. Audition will also include four-octave major and minor scales and arpeggios.

Technique: In this level, you will be required to do all major or all harmonic minor scales (alternate semesters), 4 octaves, hands together, one octave apart AND all tonic major or minor arpeggios (alternate semesters), root position, 4 octaves, hands together.

Jury: In the final performance examination, you will perform three pieces from memory, plus samples of the technique studied

4445 Studio Instruction for Non-Majors. One hour lesson per week, 1-2 hrs. credit.

Non-music majors and music minors (upperclass). Requires audition of full keyboard faculty.

Admission Audition: Must have completed four semesters of level 2445 before auditioning. Within the last 12 months before audition, should have studied:

(1) one complete Classical Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Clementi, or Beethoven;

(2) Bach Prelude and Fugue or a suite;

(3) one large piece or a set of smaller pieces from the Romantic period;

(4) a significant piece or set of pieces from the 20th century.

All pieces must be memorized, however, only a representative sample (at least three works) needs to be offered for the audition jury. (Past jury sheets will verify that all repertoire was learned, memorized, and performed in the last 12 months.)

Technique: In this level, you will be required to do all major AND all minor scales, 4 octaves, hands together AND all major and minor tonic arpeggios, 4 octaves, hands together. The speed of the scales and arpeggios must be at least MM quarter = 100

Jury: In the final performance examination, you will perform at least three pieces from memory, plus samples of the technique studied

3455 Studio Instruction. One hour lesson, 1-3 hrs. credit.

Music education concentrations (upperclass), music education secondaries (graduate), theory/composition concentrations and secondaries (upperclass & graduates). Requires audition of full keyboard faculty.

Admission Audition: Must have completed four semesters of level 2455 before auditioning. Within the last 12 months before audition, should have studied:

(1) one complete Classical Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Clementi, or Beethoven;

(2) Bach Prelude and Fugue or a suite;

(3) one large piece or a set of smaller pieces from the Romantic period;

(4) a significant piece or set of pieces from the 20th century.

7435 Individual Instruction in Instrumental and Vocal Techniques. One hour lesson, 1 hr. credit.

Non-music major graduate students, graduate music major secondaries and electives.

Admission Audition: Play two short pieces in contrasting styles (slow & fast, loud & quiet, different composers). One must be memorized. Sample repertoire: Bach Two-Part Invention, Kuhlau/Haydn Sonatina movement, Schumann Traumerei, Bartok For Children

Technique: In this level, you will be required to do all major or all harmonic minor scales (alternate semesters), 4 octaves, hands together, one octave apart AND all tonic major or minor arpeggios (alternate semesters), root position, 4 octaves, hands together.

Jury: In the final performance examination, you will perform at least two short pieces from memory, plus samples of the technique studied

4455 Studio Instruction. One hour lesson. 1-5 hrs. credit.

Performance majors (upperclass). Requires audition of full keyboard faculty.

Admission Audition: Must have completed four semesters of level 2455 before auditioning. Within the last 12 months before audition, should have studied significant works:

(1) one complete Classical Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Clementi, or Beethoven;

(2) Bach Prelude and Fugue or a suite;

(3) one large piece or a set of smaller pieces from the Romantic period;

(4) a significant piece or set of pieces from the 20th century.

All pieces must be memorized, however, only a representative sample (at least three contrasting works) needs to be offered for the audition jury. (Past jury sheets will verify that all repertoire was learned, memorized, and performed in the last 12 months.)

Technique: In this level, you will be required to do all major AND all minor scales (3 forms), 4 octaves, parallel and contrary motion AND all major and minor tonic and all diminished seventh arpeggios, 4 octaves, parallel and contrary motion. The speed of the scales and arpeggios must be at least MM quarter = 120

Jury: In the final performance examination, you will perform at least three pieces from memory, plus samples of the technique studied. An elective recital is also acceptible for the audition or jury, providing piano faculty can hear the recital live or recorded.

8455 Studio Instruction. One hour lesson. 1-5 hrs. credit.

Performance majors (graduates). Requires audition of full keyboard faculty.

Admission Audition: Must have completed an undergraduate degree in piano or equivalent before auditioning.

SOLO PIANO:

Must play:

(1) one complete Classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Clementi, or Beethoven

(a full concerto by Mozart or Beethoven may also fill this requirement)

AND

Selections from at least two of these three additional categories:

(2) Bach Prelude and Fugue, or other major work;

(3) one large work from the Romantic period;

(4) a significant piece or set of pieces from the 20th century.

All pieces must be memorized.

ACCOMPANYING:

Must play four selections:

(1-2) At least two memorized selections from the four categories detailed above AND

(3-4) Two selections of contrasting accompanying literature; these may be either instrumental or vocal, or both, but should demonstrate a range of ensemble abilities. You may bring your own collaborator, or we will try to find one for you here (appropriate notice needed).

Technique: In this level, you will be required to do all major AND all minor scales (3 forms), 4 octaves, parallel and contrary motion, in 3rds, 6ths, and 10ths, AND all major and minor tonic and all seventh chord arpeggios, 4 octaves, parallel and contrary motion. The speed of the scales and arpeggios must be at least MM quarter = 144

Jury: In the final performance examination, you will perform at least three pieces from memory (SOLO), plus samples of the technique studied. ACCOMPANYING majors must play at least one memorized solo selection and a representative selection of accompanying repertoire studied in the semester with live collaborator.
