Missouri String Project

viloinistThe Missouri String Project has been a part of the Columbia community since 1977. The Project has a two-fold mission – to prepare University music students for their future as public school and private teachers, and to introduce 3rd & 4th grade students to music by giving them the opportunity to study the violin, viola or cello. MU music education and performance majors serve as teachers, and receive instruction and guidance from MU viola professor Leslie Perna, the Director of the MSP. Young students are provided instruction through group lessons and string chamber orchestra rehearsals, and perform their own concerts each semester. These students benefit from inexpensive yet extensive instruction from excited and energetic teachers, while teachers who participate get invaluable hands-on teaching experience in a supervised atmosphere of learning before they graduate to jobs in the public schools or begin their own private teaching studios. Dozens of teachers from the project have found the experience invaluable as they pursue a career in teaching, as well as in their day to day professional lives. Hundreds of young students have begun their musical lives with the MSP, and many still play today.

Greetings, and Happy New Year!
It's time to get back in the swing with the MSP!

Schedule for Group Lessons and String Orchestra
Winter, 2008 -- 1st & 2nd Year Students

*Special Notice*

Since our concert was cancelled at the end of last semester, we will begin this semester with our concert presentation! The concert will take place on Friday, Feb. 1 at 6:00 pm in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall. Dress Rehearsal will be during our orchestra class at 5:10 in the FAB, just prior to the concert. We will only have 1 group class before the concert, but all the music to be performed will be the same as the original program, so don’t forget to practice, practice practice!

Supplies Needed :

  • Your own rented/purchased instrument. Renting an instrument for use in the MSP is the responsibility of each individual student and parent. You may rent/buy your instrument and music from whomever you choose. However, a local music store representative will be at the Open House for your convenience, and will be happy to service your rental/purchase needs at a competitive rate. Information about rental policies and pricing will be available at the Open Houses or by contacting the MSP after September 9th.
  • Lesson book "All For Strings," Method Book 1 "All For Strings" Theory Book I (Both can be purchased at a local music store)
  • Wire Music Stand
  • Shoulder rest for violinists and violists. These can be purchased from the MSP for $3.
  • Lesson notebook and pencil, for teacher assignments and note-taking
  • Optional - CD performance of Book I music for each instrument. This is highly recommended, as aural training is critical to the timely development of a learning musician. The set of 2 CD's, performed by MSP teachers, can be purchased through the MSP office for $5.

Scholarship Instruments:

The MSP has an assortment of scholarship loaner instruments.   Instruments available are limited, of various sizes, and will be awarded based on

  1. Financial need
  2. Instrument and size requirements
  3. the order or requests received.

Instruments are awarded for the school year and must be returned after the May Concert, unless other arrangements are made with the Director.   Please complete and present this application form to the Director of the MSP.   To be eligible for a loaner insrument, you need not receive other financial aid.   Instruments may be picked up at the School of Music by arrangement with MSP.   A security deposit of $250 must be received at the time of the loan (either cash, check or credit card number).   When the instrument is returned in the same condition as when loaned, the deposit will be promptly returned.   Students and parents are responsible for the proper care of the instrument.   The borrower must pay damage or neglect costs.   Please submit the Scholarship Instrument Application form with your application for the MSP.   You will be notified about scholarship loaner status before the start of String Project activities.
