Mozart’s brilliant and witty opera is an expose on human relationships.  Don Alfonso makes a bet with his young friends, Guglielmo and Ferrando, the fiancés of Fiordiligi and Dorabella, that he can get the girls to fall in love with someone new within 24 hours. The boys play along with him, mostly because they have faith in their sweethearts, and they stage a false exit, marching off to join their regiment “at the front.”  The boys then change clothes into exotic costumes, and they proceed to woo the opposite girl.  At first, the girls are very strong in their disdain for these exotic creatures, but eventually, they discover that they are attracted to them.  As they play their parts in Don Alfonso’s intrigues, all four of the lovers re-examine their own original own pre-conceptions about love, and grow older and wiser as a result.
