There are two big bands each consisting of approximately twenty student musicians: Concert Jazz Band and Studio Jazz Band. The quality of past performances has resulted in "Outstanding Ensemble" and "Outstanding Soloist" awards at the prestigious Notre Dame, Wichita, North Texas, and Elmhurst College Jazz Festivals. The Concert Jazz Band performed at the Missouri Music Educators Association conference in 2003 and 2008. Each year prominent jazz artists work and perform with the students. Guests in past years have included Mike Stienel, Jamey Aebersold, Rob McConnell, Dominic Spera, Phil Wilson, Bob Mintzer, Benny Golson, Bobby Shew, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, John Fedchock, Ron Miles, Plas Johnson, Terrell Stafford, Mike Mainieri, Rufus Reid and many more. All of the ensembles regularly rehearse and perform the finest classic and contemporary literature throughout the year. Membership is by audition, and is open to all MU students regardless of major. The Concert Jazz Band is conducted by Arthur White; Studio Jazz Band is conducted by Loyd Warden.

There are 8-10 jazz combos consisting of seven members or less that rehearse regularly each semester. It is in these combos that members hone their skills while learning repertoire. Students have the opportunity to perform at university and local functions, giving them a professional working experience. Student compositions and arrangements are encouraged and performed in a creative atmosphere, with a strong emphasis on improvisation. Membership is open to all students regardless of major or instrument, by audition.
