Brian A. Silvey (Ph.D., The University of Texas; M.M.E., Wichita State University; B.M.E., Morehead State University) is an Assistant Professor of Music Education and the Director of the Symphonic Band at the University of Missouri. At MU, he teaches instrumental materials and methods, undergraduate conducting and rehearsal techniques, basic music skills, current topics in music education, and foundations of music education. He also assists with the administration of athletic bands. Prior to his appointment at MU, he served on the faculty of Wichita State University where he taught undergraduate and graduate level music education courses. Dr. Silvey has presented music education research and teacher preparation clinics at state, national, and international venues. He is published in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Journal of Band Research, the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series, and The Instrumentalist. He currently serves on the editorial board of the Missouri Journal of Research in Music Education. His research interests include conducting effectiveness and expressivity, instrumental conducting pedagogy, and preservice teacher training. His professional memberships include the Music Educators National Conference, College Band Directors National Association, Missouri Bandmasters Association, College Music Society, Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Phi Kappa Lambda. He is an experienced events adjudicator, guest conductor, and guest clinician, having worked with bands across the Midwest. |
