Graduate Teaching Assistanceships

Graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs) are offered to master's or doctoral degree students with exceptional ability. They are available in voice, piano, class piano, woodwinds, brass, percussion, choir, band (marching, concert, and jazz), orchestra, music theory, music history and music education (music for classroom teachers), dependent on the needs of the school.

The responsibilities of a GTA range from assisting a faculty member with classroom preparation and paper grading to teaching an undergraduate course under faculty supervision. Although a few .50 appointments are made, the bulk are .25 appointments. A typical load for a .25 appointment is teaching a three-credit-hour course, or seven contact hours of private teaching per week, or 10-12 clock hours per week assisting a professor, or a combination of duties for an equivalent amount of time. A quarter-time appointment (.25 load) carries a salary of $4,412 for the 2003-2004 academic year. In addition to the salary, the educational fees (tuition) will be waived for the academic year in which the appointment is held. Educational fees are also waived for the summer immediately proceeding the academic year in which a GTA is held, provided that the student begins study on the new graduate degree program that summer. This provision allows some master's degree students to complete all degree requirements within a fourteen-month period. Special fees such as the applied music fee, computer fee, health fee, and activities fee can not be waived and must be paid by the student.

Students awarded a .25 GTA must be admitted in full standing to a graduate degree in music or music education and must be enrolled in 9 credit hours of coursework during each of the fall and winter terms. New students seeking appointment as a GTA must submit application materials for both admission to a graduate degree program and for an assistantship by March 1 in order to receive consideration for the following school year.

Reappointment to a GTA is based on satisfactory progress toward completing the degree requirements and satisfactory performance in duties associated with the graduate assistantship. Master's degree students may hold a graduate assistantship for a total of two years; doctoral students may be appointed for a total of four years.

Applications and supporting materials are due by March 1 of the preceding year. Auditions, live or taped, are required in the areas of performance. For additional information on Graduate Teaching Assistantships, contact:
