Jared R. Rawlings, Ph.D. (he/him/his) was appointed tenured Professor and Director of the School of Music at the University of Missouri-Columbia on September 1, 2023. From 2016 to 2023 he taught undergraduate and graduate music education coursework at the University of Utah where he served in leadership positions including Associate Director of the School of Music, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Music Education Area Head, and was appointed Associate Dean for Faculty & Academic Affairs (College of Fine Arts) in 2022. Prior to arriving at the University of Utah in the fall of 2016, he served as Assistant Professor and Director of Music Education at Stetson University, School of Music.

Rawlings served the School of Music at Utah during a challenging period in the institution’s history, as it worked to comprehensively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. During his administrative tenure, Rawlings guided several innovative, interdisciplinary curricular and programmatic enterprises, expanded resources for student success and wellness, and was integral to the successful application for re-accreditation to the National Association of Schools of Music. While serving as an Associate Dean he developed cross-campus initiatives, supported faculty scholarly and creative work, launched the inaugural cohort of the CFA faculty leadership development program, and guided the reappointment reviews for college faculty.

Rawlings is a well-regarded music teacher educator who consistently works with scholars, master pedagogues, and performing artists of varied disciplines and partnerships with school districts, which complement an active and prolific research profile. His research, which appears in leading research journals and texts, addresses issues related to arts equity, music teacher and conducting pedagogy, and adolescent, school-based social interactions. Most prominently, Rawlings is known for his award-winning research focused on bullying in music classrooms and his body of work has been recognized by the American Educational Research Association, the World Anti-Bullying Forum, and the Bullying Research Network. His book, Reflections on Elizabeth A. H. Green’s Life and Career in Music Education was published in 2022 by Routledge Press. Rawlings has presented his research to national and international audiences across the world and currently serves on the editorial board of UPDATE: Applications of Research in Music Education and the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education. Rawlings was elected as a peer reviewer for scholarly journals, including the Journal of Interpersonal Violence,Psychology of Music, and Music Educators Journal and has served as a National Endowment for the Arts Research Labs Panel Reviewer.

Rawlings received a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Michigan with a cognate in Wind Band Conducting; a Master of Music degree in Wind Band Conducting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baldwin Wallace University (cum laude). He is an active member of the National Association of Music Education (NAfME), the Missouri Music Education Association, College Band Director’s National Association, College Music Society, the Bullying Research Network, and the International Society of Research on Aggression.
