University Singers, China 2016 - Day 1 (May 19, 2016)
It is 8:30 am on Thursday, May 19th in China. We all met at the St. Louis airport at 4:00 am (Central time) on Tuesday morning, and after three long flights and an hour and a half bus ride we made it to the Xingyuan Hotel on the Shandong University of Technology (SDUT) campus in Zibo, (outside of Jinan) about 2 am Thursday morning. We are all awake and about to head out for a tour of the campus, followed by brunch. Later today we will be attending a concert of traditional Chinese instruments and rehearsing with the SDUT choir.
It’s 11:20 pm on Thursday evening. We had a full day of touring the university, singing, and meeting new students. We started the day with a tour and Topher Otake was surprised with a birthday cake from the university! We had brunch at a cafeteria on campus and then rehearsed with the SDUT choir on the two pieces we are singing with them for our concert next week. We had a sound check/rehearsal during the afternoon and then were invited to a banquet where we were served an incredible amount of food. It was “family” style, so the food was brought out and placed on a lazy susan turntable. We ate things such as jellyfish, sea cucumber, and other traditional Zibo cuisine. Finally, the university put on a concert of traditional Chinese music performed by music students of the university. Tomorrow we will be traveling to the Qufu, the hometown of the philosopher Confucius.
