Community World Music Ensembles: Steel Pan and Mbira
The Community Steel Pan Ensemble welcomes anyone interested in learning how to play the steel pan, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, in a comfortable group setting. Throughout the session, the group will be playing traditional calypsos and other musical styles while learning the history of the pan and Trinidadian culture. The only requirement to become a member is that you must be able to read music. No prior experience with steel pans or even percussion is necessary. The session will end with an informal performance held in Loeb Hall 201. A minimum of 6 people will need to enroll in this ensemble.
The Community Mbira Ensemble welcomes anyone interested in learning how to play the mbira, a traditional Shona instrument from Zimbabwe, in a comfortable group setting. Throughout the session, the group will learn traditional Shona songs by rote while learning the history of the mbira and Shona culture. No prior experience with mbira or even percussion is necessary. The session will end with an informal performance held in Loeb Hall. A minimum of 6 people will need to enroll in this ensemble.
Tuition & Payment
$100 per semester
Tuition is due by 5:00PM on the Friday of your first week of attendance.
- Credit card payments can be made in-person at 140 Fine Arts Building (the main music office) Monday – Friday 8am – 12pm & 1pm – 5pm. You may also call (573) 882-2606 to make a payment. If someone is unable to answer your call, please leave a message with your name and phone number and we will return your call as soon as possible.
- Checks should be made out to the MU School of Music and can be dropped off or mailed to the address below. Please indicate the name of the applicant on the check.
- Cash is only accepted in-person at the music office.
