Steps for Applying

All MM or MA applicants must have: 

  • A completed baccalaureate degree in music, or the equivalent, at an accredited institution of higher education by the time of matriculation. 
  • A grade point average of B (3.0) or better in the last 60 hours of undergraduate program. 
  • Additional requirements vary according to the major area of study. 

Priority application deadline to begin studies in the fall semester (August to December) is December 1. Applicants must submit all required materials (see below) by this date to receive full consideration for admission and for assistantship/financial support. Applications received after December 1 will be considered as space permits.

 You will need to submit: 

  • Application form 

  • Unofficial transcripts 

  • TOEFL scores (international students) 

  • Application fee ($75 domestic, $100 international) 

  • Contact information for three individuals who will be asked to write letters of recommendation for you 

  • Résumé or Curriculum Vitae 

  • Essay describing your professional goals 

  • Select a preferred date for an in-person audition or interview.   

It is highly recommended that graduate applicants visit the campus in person, however, if you are unable to attend one of the specified dates, you may request a special date. 

  • One of the following: 

  • Pre-screening video recording including at least two contrasting pieces and a repertoire list

  • Samples of scholarly writing (Musicology and Music Theory majors) 

  • Samples of original compositions (Composition majors) 

 Graduate Audition Days 

Through the Slate application system with Graduate Studies, you will be able to select preferred in-person audition dates.  The dates for students planning to enter in the Fall 2023 semester are: 

  • Monday, January 29, 2024

  • Monday, February 26, 2024

Once your application process is complete through the Office of Graduate Studies, the faculty members in your area will confer regarding your materials and determine if an invitation will be extending to you for an on-campus audition and interview.  This invitation will come from the faculty, and you will work with them to confirm a schedule for your time on campus. 

A graduate audition day usually consists of class visits, rehearsal observation, your audition with the faculty, and a possible interview for graduate assistantships unrelated to your area.  We try to schedule a lunch with other students and also allow you some time to talk with and ask questions of the Director of Graduate Studies and the Director of the School of Music.

The acceptance letter usually contains different options for your consideration and an acceptance form. Once you have reached a decision, the acceptance form should be completed and sent back to the School of Music Office as soon as possible.
