MCQ with Dr. Warnhoff

Austin Wright, Victoria Hargrove, Dr. Wes Warnhoff, and Andrew Mahonen

The Missouri Clarinet Quartet (MCQ), under the guidance of Dr. Wesley Warnhoff, recently returned from their European debut in Ostend, Belgium. They were performing as part of the International Clarinet Association’s (ICA) ClarinetFest 2018, a weeklong festival featuring clarinetists from around the world.  They performed and were able to attend concerts, lectures, competitions, and master classes from July 6-11 featuring some of the greatest clarinetists in the world.  MCQ was invited to perform at ICA after a rigorous selection process that only invited three college groups to perform.  The ensemble includes Victoria Hargrove, Andrew Mahonen, Erin Rhomberg, and Austin Wright - all members of the clarinet studio in the University of Missouri School of Music. Dr. Warnhoff also performed with the ensemble during the festival.  Funding for their trip was received by the School of Music through the Mizzou New Music Initiative, the Graduate Professional Council, the Professional Presentation Travel Award, and the Continuing Education Travel Award.

The concert MCQ gave was in collaboration with the Miizzou New Music Initiative (MNMI).  Through MNMI, MCQ commissioned two new works to be premiered at the festival. The first piece, "Checkerboard," was written by Aaron Mencher, a senior composition student at Mizzou who is also in the clarinet studio. The second piece, "Rocket to Venus," was written by the Artistic Director of the Mizzou New Music Initiative and University of Missouri Professor of Composition, Dr. Stefan Freund.  These two commissions fit perfectly into the mission of MNMI, MCQ, and the University of Missouri School of Music to make our School interntionally known as a hub for the creation and performance of new art music.

MCQ will be featured next week at the Mizzou International Composers Festival on Friday, July 27.  They will perform the American premiere of both these works at 7:30pm in the Missouri Theatre.  Tickets for the festival can be purchased here.
