We are deeply saddened to share that Dr. Melvin Platt, former Chair (1991–2000) and Director (2000–2008) of the Mizzou School of Music, passed away on Friday. Dr. Platt’s leadership and dedication left a lasting legacy — most notably guiding the Department of Music’s transition to the School of Music in 2000 and establishing the Melvin Platt Music Scholarship, awarded annually to top graduating seniors. His passion for Mizzou and commitment to excellence continue to inspire our community. A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 15, at 2:00 p.m. at Missouri United Methodist Church.
For a historical perspective, the PDF document featured on this page is an excerpted portion of a Music at Mizzou newsletter that includes an announcement of Dr. Platt's appointment in 1991.
