Mizzou Trumpet Studio attends the 50th International Trumpet Guild Conference at Eastman School of Music

From May 26th through May 30th, members of the Mizzou Trumpet Studio (Harper Allie, Sophie Bock, Maddy Haugsven, Gunner Russell, Bryce Taylor, Patrick Ferguson, Douglas Schaedler, Connor Long, Jackson Kenney, Andrew Friesen, Payne Morris, and Zach Beran) attended the 50th International Trumpet Guild Conference at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. The opening Cancer Blows concert paid another meaningful tribute to Ryan Anthony and his family; His son Rowan was even featured alongside José Sibaja, Wayne Bergeron, Jens Lindemann, Rex Richardson, Michael Sachs, Mary Thornton, and the Eastman Jazz Orchestra. During the week, among the many sessions and recitals that could be attended, studio member Maddy Haugsven was featured in the premiere of Nate Leslie’s Stacked Deck for trumpet and piano during the first of two new works recitals on Wednesday. Dr. Akhmadullin also participated in the World Premiere performance of Lithuanian composer Linas Rupšlaukis' Silhouettes of a Glance for 8 trumpets, conducted by the author. In addition, the trumpet studio septet performed Chris Evan Hass’s Thermal Whiplash as an opener for Andy Lott and Joey Tartell’s session on Friday titled, “Why Equipment Doesn’t Matter…Until It Does.” 

When studio members were not attending sessions and recitals, or rehearsing in different ensembles for the large Festival of Trumpets performance, they could be found roaming around the various floors of Eastman visiting the myriad of exhibits or popping into Javas next door for a quick cup of coffee. Each night featured performances from guest artists (Brassology, Clément Saunier, and Randy Brecker) followed by a jam session for any that were interested. The culmination of the conference on Saturday featured the Festival of Trumpets concert outside the school and a final performance that night with Pacho Flores as the headliner with the Rochester Philharmonic. After the conference, all the studio members made time to visit Niagara Falls before heading back home.
